Our History<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The history of Bodegas Balb\u00e1s dates back to 1777, and since then, seven generations of the same family have maintained an unbroken bond with this land and the craft of winemaking.<\/p>

Over nearly two and a half centuries we have seen the landscape, the harvests and the ways of understanding wine change, but never what defines us: respect for the origin, the value of time, and the conviction that great wines are born long before they reach the winery.<\/p>

Today we continue making our wines from the heart of the Ribera del Duero with the same dedication with which our story began, reinterpreting a family legacy to share it with new generations.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t

In 1777, the legacy of our family begins, bound to the land and the vine. Our activity was linked to producing wine for our own consumption from grapes grown on our land, which was carried in wineskins made from animal hide.<\/p>

Making these wineskins became our main trade, and so we became known as boteros (wineskin makers).<\/p>

As the years passed and barrels and glass became common in the region, this trade took a back seat, and winemaking for commercial sale grew in importance. So much so that in 1982 we were one of the ten wineries in the region that drove the founding of the Ribera del Duero Denomination of Origin.\u00a0<\/p>

Today, the winery is led by Juan Jos\u00e9 Balb\u00e1s and his wife, Clara de la Fuente, staunch defenders of our land and the ones bringing the history and wines of Bodegas Balb\u00e1s into the present. Alongside them are two of their daughters, Patricia and Mar\u00eda Balb\u00e1s.<\/p>

The Balb\u00e1s Family, aware that wine is an expression of terroir, has upheld the family philosophy of being winegrowers before winemakers: \u201c\"the potential of a wine is marked by the quality of the soil and the grapes it produces<\/em>\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t

Pedro de la Fuente, the winemaker, is the architect of the personality of Bodegas Balb\u00e1s wines.<\/p>

He has been linked to the winery for more than 25 years and is responsible for ensuring that each wine brings out the best of itself.
